Reports that Health Minister accepts HSE argument that now is not the time for reform are “alarming” People Before Profit health spokesperson, Gino Kenny TD, has described reports in today’s Irish Times that the Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly TD, has accepted the argument from the HSE that now is not the time for reform of the health service as “highly alarming” and exposes the truth that there is not the appetite for the necessary reform of the health service in government.

He said that now is precisely the time to make fundamental changes to the health service in this country and transition to a single tier, fully public, free at the point of use health service. He said: “Reports that the Health Minister thinks that it is now time to slam the brakes on the vital reforms of the health service is highly alarming and demonstrates that there is not the political appetite in government to carry through the kind of fundamental reforms in the health service that we need.”  “What the pandemic has shown us is that fundamental changes can happen if there is the political will. It is outrageous that the Minister would consider going along with slowing down the gains towards a single tier health system that were made during the covid crisis- even though these were just initial steps.” “This is a very serious development- one which does not bode well for the implementation of Sláintecare.” “I will be raising this issue with Minister Donnelly in the Dáil.” The post Now Is The Time For Fundamental Reform Of The Health Service appeared first on People Before Profit.
