*** Spanish & French below ***The Sahrawi population has been forced into exile for more than 40 years; the permanent diaspora and the impossibility of returning to their territory without it implying a life of submission.

The Sahrawis have been subjected to human rights violations in the face of the passivity of the United Nations and other international actors. The action of MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) has been clearly ineffective, not only in failing to achieve the objectives for which it was created, but also in giving Morocco the opportunity to exploit the natural resources of Western Sahara and to control and displace the population. It is also important to highlight the roles played by Spain and France in this conflict: France, as the main power supporting Morocco’s autonomy proposal; and Spain, as the power responsible for resolving the conflict. It should be recalled that Spain, as the former colonising power of Western Sahara, is responsible for resolving the conflict and for pushing for the convening of the referendum on self-determination of the Sahara, which has been pending for 40 years.Last March, it was leaked to the press that the Spanish government had radically changed its position of neutrality towards Western Sahara and recognised Moroccan sovereignty. The previous position of the Spanish government was already highly questionable and criticised, as the neutrality of the Spanish state in the conflict only strengthened the aggressor, i.e. Morocco. Now, the autonomy proposal breaks completely with the resolutions, which envisage the holding of a referendum for the independence of the former Spanish colony. Thus, it is not a Moroccan territory to be decentralised, but rather a non-self-governing territory awaiting decolonisation. It should be recalled that Western Sahara is a territory that lives under a regime of military occupation and plunder, and that Morocco does not allow the existence of parties that are not favourable to the Moroccan regime. This change of position, once again, shows that the PSOE is the main ally of the Moroccan regime in Spain. It also shows once again how the “most progressive government in history”, kidnapped by the interests of the PSOE, is progressive only in declarations: the PSOE is blocking all initiatives of profound change of its allies in the government, contrary to the change of position, as well as the majority of the Spanish Parliament that expressed its rejection to the change of position on 7 April 2022 in plenary session. As the Party of the European Left, we declare– Our total condemnation of Moroccan military interventions in the SADR area.– Our rejection of the Alawite occupation of Western Sahara as an imperialist symbol of natural resource exploitation and national oppression.– Concern about the inaction of the United Nations and MINURSO for the effective resolution of the conflict, which requires, as agreed and as demanded by the Saharawi people, a binding referendum on self-determination.– Concern about the change of position of the PSOE in Spain, not listening to the will of its governmental partner, the Parliament and the majority of Spanish citizens.– We express our most absolute and firm solidarity with the Sahrawi people, the SADR institutions, the Polisario Front and the UJSARIO.*** Spanish ***Posicionamiento sobre la situación del Sáhara Occidental – Partido de la Izquierda EuropeaLa población saharaui lleva más de 40 años obligada al exilio; la diáspora permanente y a la imposibilidad de volver a su tierra o vivir sin sometimiento.
