Today it would be 98-year-old Árpád Göncz, the first President of Hungary after the regime change, writer and translator.

As a true liberal, Democratic politician, he has fought his whole life to defend liberties. As President of the Republic, he took the task of the Constitution as seriously as possible, the embodiment of national unity and the protection of the democratic order. He has repeatedly and methodically opposed the overpowering of the then government, and despite his conflictpolicy, he was able to remain by far the most popular Hungarian politician during his active years. We must take an example of Árpád Göncz, because today, even in the fight against the freedom-limiting, hateful, exclusionary policies of the Orban government, true statesmen like him would be desperately needed. His memory will be preserved, and his struggle for a free, equal and just Hungary will continue! Picture source: magyarnarancs.hu
