EL condemns coup attempt in the US and calls for the immediate removal of Trump from officeThe Party of the European Left condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the events that took place in Washington D.C.

this January 6: A coup attempt whose major responsible is President Trump.Trump’s inability to acknowledge the results of the November 3rd Presidential election, his actions since then, and particularly yesterday’s incitement to violence in the heart of the nation he leads, demonstrate that he is no longer able to remain in office for another hour. The 25th amendment of the U.S. Constitution should be invoked as soon as possible, for the sake of the American democracy and its people.Also a significant faction of the Republican Party should be held accountable for this vile attack on democracy. This faction has been standing by President Trump, consistently refusing to recognise Biden’s election victory and unwilling to put pressure on the outgoing President to acknowledge his defeat, doing serious damage to the U.S. and the entire world in the process. These are not responsible politicians but rogues!We make this statement from the other side of the Atlantic because we are deeply concerned and believe it is our duty as international actors. These events raise not only great concern for democracy, but also for the stability of the United States as an important factor on a global scale. Even taking into account the deficits of democratic politics, the stability of the United States is essential to a multipolar world.January 6, 2021, will be marked in history for the worst reasons but also for some good ones that should not be diminished, with the election of two Democratic senators in the state of Georgia, giving the Democrats the majority in the U.S. Senate. This is the result of an outstanding collective effort by left and progressive forces all across Georgia to give power to the people and, with it, strengthen democracy. We truly hope President Biden is willing to take advantage of the opportunities he has been given with this victory and moves forward with more progressive policies, made for of the many and not the few.These events also showed us that together we can defeat Trump but also Trumpism, in the U.S. and around the world. They will not succeed if we organize and come together to fight these racist and fascist forces.Our solidarity to our American comrades and courage for the fights ahead. Democracy will prevail.
