Eva Decroix: The definition of "antigypsyism" is a symbolic gift to Romani people and another step in the fight against hatred against this minority(www.ods.cz On Wednesday, 27 March, at a joint meeting of the Subcommittee on the Promotion of Democracy and Human Rights Abroad, the Subcommittee on National Minorities and the Subcommittee on the Protection of Human Rights, MPs adopted an internationally recognized definition of so-called "antigypsyism".

Lucie Fuková, Czech Government Commissioner for Romani Minority Affairs, and Czech Foreign Ministry Special Envoy for the Holocaust, Interreligious Dialogue and Freedom of Religion Robert Řehák spoke at the meeting. The event was held under the auspices of MP Eva Decroix (ODS)." Long-term discrimination against the Romani minority is a great debt owed to our society. Deep-rooted prejudices often influence us from childhood. In addition, in most cases, they are difficult to quantify and write. It is also our role as parliamentarians to work to ensure that these prejudices do not affect the next generation," said MEP Eva Decroix. On Monday, 8 April, we will celebrate International Romani Day. The definition of 'antigypsyism' is a symbolic gift to mark this day, but mainly another step in the fight against hatred against this minority. The adopted definition, even though it is legally non-binding, will help Romani people not only symbolically, but also practically," said MP Eva Decroix. Changing the definition of 'antigypsyism' is not just a definition of anti-Romani attitudes, but it is an important message to Czech politicians that Romani people are counted on and that they are equal partners at all levels. Unfortunately, discrimination does not only concern socially excluded Romani people, but also those who work," said Lucie Fuková, Czech Government Commissioner for Romani Minority Affairs. Those of us who deal with the Holocaust know how far prejudice in society can go. Hatred spills over from one vessel to another. That is why we must not allow any kind of hatred to spread," concluded Robert Řehák, Special Envoy for the Holocaust, Interreligious Dialogue and Freedom of Religion at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
