On Birds and Trees Day, it is important to remind ourselves that with our current way of life, the unsustainable neoliberal economic policies of our countries, we are living our own environment at an accelerating pace.

We are close to a tipping point after which climate change can no longer be reversed and will result in the rapid collapse of the ecosystem. The civilization we know for our home is disappearing. Large-scale agriculture, mass chemical use, destruction of our green spaces, pollution of our living waters, cementing our shores further accelerates the destructive process due to climate change. We still have the opportunity to act, but if we do not act now, we will leave our children with an unlivable environment. Unfortunately, the Fidesz government is at the forefront of destroying our environment, even though Hungary could be a green model country in Europe. Instead, Viktor Orbán ties Hungary to Russian fossil and nuclear energy, serves the short-term economic interests of environmentally destructive corporations, and destroys our country's natural heritage. Since its foundation, LMP has been fighting for the preservation of the biodiversity of the Carpathian Basin. As pioneers in the Hungarian Parliament, we have submitted a number of proposals to this end in the last decade. The rejection of environmentally destructive free trade agreements, the non-GMO, the ban on killer pesticide chemicals, the moratorium on the installation of green space, the protection of our great lakes, the phase-out of nuclear energy, the strengthening of chemical-free, local-scale agriculture, or the establishment of a landscape-friendly water management system, were all proposals on our part that could guarantee the preservation of the wonderful ecosystem of the Carpathian Basin. There is an effective policy and social response to curb climate change and protect the fauna and flora around us. Ecopolitics is the only real solution to the ecological crisis of the 21st century, because the future will either be green or it will not be! LMP Press
