Limburg receives half a million euros from the Bicycle FundPosted at 07:18h in mobility, Flemish Parliament by Stella VansummerenVlaam's Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters significantly increased the funds for the Bicycle Fund from ten to fifteen million euros in 2021.

The province of Limburg can receive a maximum of three million euros from this. After an initial call to the provinces to submit their subsidy applications for 2021, Limburg now receives 496,840 euros for four bicycle projects. This is evident from the answer given by Minister Peeters to a written question from Flemish MP Marino Keulen (Open Vld). "Instead of two million euros, three million euros in bicycle resources can flow to the province of Limburg this year. Then, after the second call, many more projects have to be submitted by the Limburg municipalities. I really call on them to make use of the funds that Flanders and the province make available", says Cologne. The Bicycle Fund is a subsidy scheme for which the Flemish government cooperates with the five provinces. Municipalities can apply at the provincial level for projects on the supra-local functional cycle route network. The provinces take on part of the total cost and also pre-finance the Flemish subsidy share. Flanders, in turn, offers them the opportunity to submit bundled subsidy applications twice a year, whereby the Flemish subsidy for various projects can be recovered. Limburg now receives almost half a million euros for four cycling projects. In Beringen the Zandhoefstraat (the Albertkanaalroute) is being tackled and for Bilzen it is about the Vossenkuilstraat and the Hoefaertweg. In addition, a bicycle bridge was built in Dilsen-Stokkem over the Kantonsweg and there will be lighting on the cycle path to Achel in Neerpelt.Open VLD MP Marino Keulen: "The Flemish Government ensured a serious increase in the resources for cycling infrastructure this year. That's a good thing. In this way, we are taking further steps towards more sustainable mobility and encouraging people to use the bicycle. But making funds available when no applications are submitted for it makes little sense. I therefore call on the municipalities of Limburg to claim the budgets that Flanders and the province have made available."
