Minister Somers & Club President Verhaeghe attend 'Give Racism the Red Card' lesson in KTA BruggePosted at 18:42h in general by Ellen Brits"Give Racism the Red Card" is a project of Club Brugge Foundation, the social leg of dutch champion Club Brugge.

It is a ready-made curriculum for students of the first grade of secondary education, on themes of racism and diversity. During the school visit of Minister of Equal Opportunities Bart Somers, Club Brugge President Bart Verhaeghe and Bruges ships of Education Ann Soete to KTA Brugge, the class with the 2,000th participant in this project was put in the spotlight. Despite the fact that the current generation of young people is much more communicative than previous generations, they continue to face barriers in talking about and acting against racism and discrimination in their environment. Many teachers are also struggling these days with how to deal with racism in school and how to give their pupils every chance of a positive and safe environment, which is so often lost in the wider society. To answer this call, Club Brugge, through its social operation of Club Brugge Foundation, has started the project 'Give Racism The Red Card'. In collaboration with 7 other top European clubs, Club Brugge Foundation has drawn up a detailed educational curriculum on the themes of racism, discrimination, equality, diversity and LGBTQ+. It uses the appearance and impact of the Club Brugge football club and its players to make these themes more negotiable among young people. These lessons fit seamlessly within the final terms 'citizenship education'. The lesson package is offered free of charge to all Flemish secondary schools, to participate with their students. Already 21 schools from all over Flanders have started this curriculum, which accounts for 2,000 students. The class of the KTA Bruges with the 2,000th participant in this project was surprised this afternoon with a visit by Minister of Equal Opportunities Bart Somers, Club Brugge President Bart Verhaeghe and Bruges Ships of Education Ann Soete who came to take a lesson. This project will be financially supported and recognised by Flanders in 2021 as a qualitative project that contributes to a shared and inclusive society to which every citizen actively contributes. Equal Opportunities Minister Bart Somers said: "Football is the most important afterthought of life and clubs have a serious impact. I can only welcome the fact that a leading and influential football club such as Club Brugge has developed this curriculum. If we want a Flanders with more equal opportunities, then projects like this are really important. Our young people are the future. The fact that teachers have also applied for this curriculum en masse is particularly encouraging.  We all win in a Flanders with more equal opportunities."
