The proposal for a law amendment submitted by the LMP would, in a qualified case, increase the limit of imprisonment for animal cruelty to up to five years.

In recent times, several horrific cases of animal cruelty have come to light again, whether it is the poisoning case in Pécs, the unfortunate dog beaten with a hammer, or the carcasses of the hundreds of tortured dogs found near Hajdúsámson. No wonder there is a growing social need to tighten the sanctions on animal cruelty. On the other hand, the moral development of a society is indeed well expressed in how we treat the sentient beings around us, including the companion animals that live with us. The LMP believes that, at legislative level, the societal expectation that animal cruelty is not acceptable under any circumstances and that it must be tackled by all possible means. The LMP's proposal normally imposes a custodial sentence of up to three years for a felony, in a qualified case a custodial sentence of one year to five years, while preserving the proportionality of the criminal penalty, leaving it in charge of the judiciary.
