58th anniversary of the Turkish bombings of Tillyria: The painful anniversaries of history make us wiserThe 58th anniversary of the Turkish bombings of Tillyria recalls another tragic and painful page of Cypriot history.

Older generations still have vivid memories of the turkish air force's raid with napalm bombs that spread death and destruction in the region. AKEL pays tribute to the fallen and the victims of the Turkish raid of August 1964.The raid of the Turkish air force on our island took place at a time when the NATO plans for the dismemberment of our island were culminating on the basis of the Acheson Plan, which was the compass for all divisive circles inside and outside Cyprus. The dichotomous plans led to the bloodshed left behind by the nationalist circles on the island, which had remained anchored in the visions of the Union and partition respectively.AKEL, on the other hand, worked at that time against the nationalist polarization that was gnawing at the foundations of the young Republic of Cyprus. He supported the non-aligned policy of Cyprus, since the diplomatic and political support of the Non-Aligned Movement and the socialist community was decisive for the preservation of the statehood of the Republic of Cyprus. At the same time, on the battlefield, EDONITES, AKELists and other members of the Popular Movement of the Left - such as Kousoulides, member of the Central Council of EDON, Astanios, Kareklas, Ikosiaris, Pauperopoulos and others - fought for the defense of Cyprus from the Turkish-NATO attacks. At the same time, we point out that the memory of the black anniversaries of the modern history of Cyprus, such as the 58th anniversary of the bombing of Tillyria, acquires meaning since it makes all of us – a people and political leadership – wiser, but above all more decisive in the struggle for a free, independent and united homeland, with its people master in their homeland. No occupation and settlement. No foreign guardians and guarantors. Without chauvinism and barbed wire. Homeland of all her children.
